What Happens After You Reach Out to a Realtor?

A lot of buyers wait to contact a Realtor because they are not sure what happens next.

Do you have to be pre-approved?

Do you need to know exactly where you want to live?

Are you going to be asked to sign something?

Does reaching out mean you are committing to work with that agent?

The short answer is no.

Reaching out can be as simple as having a question and wanting some direction.

Step 1: Reach Out and Ask Your Questions

Depending on how you find us, you might call, text, email, fill out a form, or book a call directly.

There is no right way to do it.

The first conversation is simply about understanding your situation.

We want to know things like:

  • Where are you now?

  • Where would you like to be?

  • What are you trying to accomplish?

  • When would you ideally like to move?

  • What are you unsure about right now?

You do not need to know exactly where you want to live.

You do not need to know exactly what you want to spend.

You do not need to be pre-approved.

You can simply have a question.

Maybe you are wondering whether you should talk to a lender yet.

Maybe you are trying to figure out if buying this year even makes sense.

Maybe you want to know how early you should start.

Maybe you own a home already and are unsure whether you should buy or sell first.

We are happy to talk through those questions.

There is no cost and no obligation.

Step 2: If You Want, Explore What Working Together Would Look Like

This is separate from simply reaching out with a question.

If you decide you want to learn more about what it would actually look like to work with us, we schedule a Zoom call.

That meeting is also completely free and no obligation.

The goal is to make sure you understand the process before making any decision.

We talk through:

  • The outcome you are trying to create

  • Your timeline

  • Our responsibilities

  • Your responsibilities

  • How the buying process works

  • What the plan would look like for your specific situation

This gives you a chance to see how we work and decide whether we are the right fit.

It also gives us a chance to make sure we are a good fit for what you are trying to accomplish.

You are not committing to anything just by having that conversation.

Step 3: If It Makes Sense, We Start

If everything makes sense and you decide you want to work together, onboarding starts right away.

From there, the plan depends on your situation.

That may include connecting you with the right lender, getting financing in place, narrowing down areas, defining what you are looking for, setting up your home search, and preparing you for showings and offers.

If you are still months away, the next step may be much smaller.

Sometimes the plan is simply knowing when we should reconnect.

The point is that once we decide to work together, everyone knows what needs to happen next.

You Do Not Need to Have Everything Figured Out First

A lot of buyers think they need to get their ducks in a row before reaching out to a Realtor.

We think that is backwards.

Part of our job is helping you figure out what those ducks actually are.

Our average buyer process takes around four months from the time we begin planning until closing.

Very roughly, that looks like:

2 weeks to make a plan

2 weeks to get your ducks in a row

4 weeks to search

4 weeks to clear contingencies

2 weeks to close

That timeline can be compressed when necessary.

But the earlier we can help you create the plan, the less chaotic the process tends to feel later.

The Bottom Line

There are really three different levels here.

You can reach out because you have a question.

You can have a separate conversation to explore what working with us would look like.

And if it feels like a good fit, you can decide to move forward.

The first two steps are completely free and no obligation.

You do not need to be ready to buy.

You do not need to have everything figured out.

You can just start with a question.

We are happy to answer your questions and help you figure out what your next step should be.

And if you want to explore what working with us would look like, we can walk you through that too.
